A trombone player all the way from Vermont South, Melbourne, James Macaulay studied at Monash University with Australian greats Scott Tinkler, Paul Williamson, Julien Wilson and Jordan Murray. Known for his work with a wide variety of Melbourne based artists such as the Lagerphones, the Eugene Ball Quartet, the Aaron Choulai Quintet (Tokyo), the Monash Art Ensemble and others; he is passionate about the unique history of jazz and improvised music in Australia.
James was awarded the “Sir Zelman Cowan School of Music Jazz Prize” (Composition Award) in 2012. He completed Honours in 2013, studying complex rhythms with Scott Tinkler whilst writing about the Hoodangers and their unique place in the continuum of the Melbourne trad scene.
James has performed and recorded with a wide variety of Australian and International acts, including Allan Browne, Andrea Keller, Jeremy Rose, the Australian Art Orchestra, Paul Grabowsky, Rob Burke, Maria Schneider, John Taylor, George Garzone, Mark Helias, Brian Wilson, Clairy Browne and the Bangin’ Rackettes, Harry Angus, Flap!, and many others.
“James is considered by many to be the most significant and innovative young trombone players in Australia, and I certainly support this view. James’ approach is rare in that it boldly displays intelligence and ferocious command of the instrument whilst remaining warm and lyrical. James is also one of the few emerging musicians with a genuine passion and respect for the historical legacy of the jazz in Australia. Above all, James is vehemently dedicated to personal and musical excellence.” – Eugene Ball
I offer lessons primarily to trombone students, from beginner to advanced levels, looking to improve their technique and facility as well as overall musicianship. I also offer lessons to those who are looking to develop their improvising skills, from negotiating harmony, complex rhythms and patterns, to creating a methodical, though creative practice routine. I have a comfortable studio with a piano and sympathetic acoustics that I conduct lessons in.
