Bio

Hello! My name’s Lennox. I’ve just moved to Northcote, Melbourne from Wellington, New Zealand and am looking to start my teaching practice again in AUS!

I have been teaching drum lessons at music academies, high schools and privately for over 10 years now and still absolutely love it! I studied music at Victoria University of Wellington where I gained my Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) and also hold a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary).

My love of the drums and music spans through many genres and has lead me to play with artists such as Len Blake (UK), Revulva, Serebii, Arjuna Oakes (UK), Dateline, Hummucide, Willydelphia (UK), LILA, Will McClean and many more.

I have taught literally hundreds of students from ages six to sixty and through this process have become accustomed to working with all types of people from all backgrounds and abilities.

My teaching philosophy, particularly for younger students, revolves around two ideas: Fostering a good relationship with music and allowing students to follow their own interests.

I believe the first and most important step with regards to musical progress is to help students develop a love for music. From there, we can learn theory, various techniques and different styles but in my experience, if students don’t develop a good relationship with music first, they might not feel motivated to practice in the first place!

Important

I don’t currently have a studio space (TBC). At this time lessons can only be held at students’ homes/practice spaces. Fee may be higher depending on location (to be agreed upon on a case by case basis).

Parent/student testimony:

“They say that behind every great student is an awesome teacher and this holds very true for Lennox and my son, Seth.

Seth’s been under Lennox’s wing for almost 8 years now, half my son’s life, and we’ve seen how much he has bloomed into this amazing drummer. Lennox has guided Seth into being confident about his craft, taking pleasure in drumming to any song, and pushing his limits to finish hard pieces.

When the teacher believes in their students’ capabilities, it translates to success. Lennox has always believed in Seth and pushed him to be better.

When Lennox told us he’s moving to Aussie, we were heartbroken. Seth’s found not only a teacher in Lennox but a mentor, friend, big brother, and role model. You are lucky to have him as a teacher! Thank you for being the best Lennox. You will always be family to us!”

More Information on Lessons

My teaching always revolves around the interests and personality of the student. I always get students (especially beginners and younger students) playing to music as soon as possible. As mentioned above, I believe developing a love for music is always the most critical first step and that begins with actually playing along to recordings.

Once we have a song selected, I create exercises that are personal to each piece and each student. By teaching in this way (i.e song first, exercises/technique second) students can easily understand why they are practicing the exercises that they are tasked with and also feel an internal sense of motivation (i.e ‘If I practice these exercises, I’ll be a step closer to being able to play a song that I like’).

When it comes to song selection, I always encourage students to suggest their own songs or genres that they would like to learn. This way, students feel connected to their learning and motivated to practice. Once we have agreed upon a song I will transcribe the drum part myself and send it to you as a PDF for practicing.

If a student suggests a song that is either too difficult or not challenging enough, I will alter the sheet music accordingly to ensure that they are working at an appropriate level, to foster growth and sucess. This process happens naturally once I get to know the student, their level and how to work with them effectively.

Through this process of song selection, personalised exercises and the scaling of difficulty as necessary, new techniques, skills and challenges arise naturally and at the appropriate time for each student. Everything I do in my teaching is based around the student’s interest, personality and where they are at, so lessons will look different for each student.

In addition to this, I have tutored many students through Trinity Rock and Pop Drum Exams (Grade 1-8) and am happy to do so if that is desired.
