Teaching Info

I work with all students on a bespoke individualised level – with beginners the emphasis is on reading skills, technical preparation (which includes bow hold, violin/viola hold, maintaining a solid sound – which is very important for enjoyment of practice and routine building) and fun – chiefly achieved via personal enthusiasm and a positive communication ethic. For intermediate/advanced student the lessons guidelines are decided together – for exam/audition preparation we will work within several goal posts set over time to make sure that students feel secure and empowered for the big day.

The exam process in detail will be structured on the following guidelines:

1. A strong technical preparation which includes postural training so the student can achieve the most demanding aspects of their musical examination comfortably.

2. In depth analysis of the musical form, structure and background of composition required for general knowledge testing within most Australian accredited examinations boards.

3. Key emphasis on memorisation training (a wonderful aspect of musical training in general) and performance practice opportunities (via local eisteddfods and competitions) to help the student perform well under pressure.

All of this is achieved with personal enthusiasm rather than old school severity – I do not foster any negativity within the classroom.

My technical and musical expression points of interest are drawn from extensive training under Australian and Dutch performers and pedagogues including Michelle Walsh, Kerry Smith, Graeme Jennings, Susan Collins and Stef Farrands as well as over 15 years of professional ensemble playing. My youth orchestra audition process stems from many years of successfully joining Australia’s leading youth orchestra’s – chiefly the AYO National Music Camp and Seasons ensembles from age 12 onwards.

Technical work will include scales, exercises and physical awareness training including postural awareness and breathing exercises.

Repertoire listed for training is exhaustive and can be catered to students of any genre.
