Bio

My name is Alex Gorbatov, I am a Melbourne-based tenor, choral director, and educator specialising in early music, contemporary Australian repertoire, and healthy, sustainable vocal technique. I’ve been directing Divisi Chamber Singers since 2019, transforming it into a critically acclaimed professional vocal group with a strong emphasis on emerging composers and community-centred projects.

As a teacher, I am known for my clear technical grounding, supportive studio culture, and ability to build confident, flexible singers and musicians. I draw on my extensive performance and conducting experience to bring a practical, joy filled, and sustainable approach.

Teaching Info

I believe that joy and excellence should fuel one another. In my teaching, whether voice, piano, or theory, I focus on helping students find confidence, curiosity, and technical security by building on their strengths and engaging both their minds and their bodies in the learning process.

Musicianship, theory, and sight-reading are woven naturally into all my lessons so that students develop a holistic understanding of music, not just isolated skills. I encourage students to think actively, listen critically, and make informed musical choices, giving them the tools to become independent, expressive musicians.

Collaborative music-making is also an important part of my studio. Four-hands piano, duet singing, and ensemble-style exercises help students build rhythmic awareness, responsiveness, and the joy of playing with others.

I offer exam preparation aligned with AMEB syllabuses when it supports a student’s goals, however my wider focus is on nurturing healthy technique, expressive performance, and a lifelong love of music. My coaching style is calm, thoughtful, and supportive, helping students feel grounded, prepared, and capable of performing at their best.
