- Dr Jucheol (Jay) Wang is a highly experienced double bassist, conductor, and music educator with over two decades of international teaching and performance experience across Korea, New Zealand, the United States, and Australia. Currently based in Melbourne, he teaches double bass at an independent school and is committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians through dynamic, engaging, and student-centred instruction. Dr Wang is a registered teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and holds current anaphylaxis and asthma management certifications. He is dedicated to providing a safe, inspiring, and supportive learning environment tailored to each student’s individual needs and goals. His teaching spans junior and senior levels, and he is particularly skilled at helping students develop confidence, technical ability, and musical expression in double bass performance. Formerly Head of Music at Rosmini College in New Zealand, Dr Wang has also held academic positions at Jeonbuk National University and Kunsan National University in Korea, and was a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa. He authored the first Korean-language double bass method book, further demonstrating his commitment to bass education. Dr Wang’s performance career includes both solo and orchestral achievements. As a soloist, he has given recitals in Korea and the United States, with notable performances at the Seoul Arts Center, Kumho Art Hall, and Kwangju University. His orchestral experience is equally distinguished: he has performed with premier ensembles such as the Asian Philharmonic under Maestro Myung-whun Chung, the Korean Chamber Orchestra, and the KBS Symphony Orchestra. He also served as Guest Principal of the Korean Symphony Orchestra. Internationally, Dr Wang has held orchestral positions with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra (USA), Bach Musica (New Zealand), and freelanced with the Auckland Philharmonia. His well-rounded experience as both a performer and educator allows him to mentor students with real-world insight into both solo and ensemble playing. Dr Wang holds a Doctorate in Double Bass Performance and Pedagogy (University of Iowa) where he studied under Professors Diana Gannett and Volkan Orhon. He also earned a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting (Dr William LaRue Jones) and a Master’s in Double Bass Performance from the University of North Texas, studying with Prof. Jeff Bradetich and privately with Prof David Murray. His undergraduate studies were completed at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea. A respected adjudicator, Dr Wang has served on the jury for a number of prestigious competitions including the Vienna Music Competition (1999), Kookmin Ilbo Competition, Music Journal of Korea and the 27th World International Music Competition in Spain (2019). Dr Wang is currently available for visiting double bass lessons for students of all levels in Melbourne. (Area between Glen Wavely and Macloud on Tuesday) Whether you’re preparing for AMEB exams, youth orchestra auditions, or simply wish to improve your technique and musicianship, Dr Wang brings a wealth of experience, international perspective, and passion for teaching to help you succeed.
