Dr Jucheol (Jay) Wang is an experienced double bassist, orchestral conductor, and music educator with more than 20 years of international teaching and performance experience across Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and the United States.

Dr Wang currently offers private double bass lessons to a limited number of students in Melbourne. Having taught students from Year 2 through to Year 12 , as well as university and advanced levels, he adapts his teaching to each student’s age, experience, and musical goals. His lessons develop strong foundations in posture, bow technique, intonation, tone production, and musical expression, with tailored preparation available for AMEB examinations, youth orchestra auditions, VCE Music, and tertiary music study.

The studio is equipped with double basses in 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 sizes, allowing younger students to begin learning with an appropriately sized instrument without the immediate expense of purchasing one.

Throughout his career, Dr Wang has taught in school and university settings, led music programmes and ensembles, and supported students at different stages of their musical development. His previous academic appointments include positions at Jeonbuk National University and Kunsan National University in South Korea, as well as a Teaching Assistant position at the University of Iowa in the United States. He also authored a Korean-language double bass method book, reflecting his commitment to double bass education.

As a performer, Dr Wang has given solo recitals in South Korea and the United States, including appearances at Seoul Arts Center, Kumho Art Hall, and Kwangju University. His orchestral experience includes performances with the Asian Philharmonic Orchestra under Maestro Myung-whun Chung, the KBS Symphony Orchestra, and the Korean Chamber Orchestra. He also served as Guest Principal of the Korean Symphony Orchestra. His international engagements include the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra in the United States, Bach Musica in New Zealand, and freelance performances with the Auckland Philharmonia.

Dr Wang holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Double Bass Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa, where he studied with Professors Diana Gannett and Volkan Orhon. He earned a Master of Music in Double Bass Performance from the University of North Texas, studying with Professor Jeff Bradetich and privately with Professor David Murray. He also holds a Master of Arts in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Iowa, where he studied with Dr William LaRue Jones, a Bachelor of Music from Chung-Ang University in Seoul, and a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary Music).

Dr Wang has served as an adjudicator for music competitions, including the Vienna Music Competition (1999), the Kookmin Ilbo Competition, Music Journal of Korea, and the 27th World International Music Competition in Spain (2019).

He holds teacher registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and NESA accreditation. His professional certifications and training include First Aid and CPR (HLTAID009, HLTAID010, HLTAID011), Anaphylaxis, Asthma management, and Child Protection training. He also holds a valid Working with Children Check (WWCC).
