Bio

Hi, I’m Erica. Welcome!

Since 2014, I’ve worked with students of all ages and skill levels, offering creative, personalised lessons in voice, guitar, ukulele and double bass — often in combination. I also specialise in teaching music theory, songwriting and composition.

I work especially well with singer-songwriters and students who want to play, sing and perhaps explore their own ideas.

Beginners can expect warm encouragement and plenty of patience, while more experienced students can dive deeper into areas like music theory, improvisation, songwriting, arranging and composition.

I teach solid, reliable technique and take it seriously in lessons, but I also believe music is about much more than just playing the notes. It’s about expression, creativity, joy, and meeting new challenges.

I offer a free consultation for all new students, and you can get a feel for my teaching approach by trying a video from my Practice Space podcast.

Teaching Info

Lessons are taught one-on-one and are suitable for absolute beginner to advanced students. They are flexible and student-led, taught primarily with no method books — just music that feels meaningful to you. Classical double bass students work with the Vance or Rabbath method books.

I specialise in teaching:

Core instrument and vocal lessons

  • Singing and vocal coaching
  • Guitar and ukulele
  • Classical double bass (Rabbath & Vance methods, french bow)
  • Contemporary double bass (jazz, folk, blues)

Lessons for musicians exploring additional skills

  • Singing lessons for instrumentalists
  • Guitar and ukulele lessons for singer-songwriters
  • Double bass lessons for singer-songwriters

Songwriting, music theory & creative development

  • Songwriting, composition, arranging, and production
  • Music theory and improvisation

Students I work with include:

Singing:

  • Singer-songwriters developing vocal technique, musicality or original music
  • Instrumentalists building confidence as singers
  • Classical musicians exploring songwriting, contemporary or jazz vocal styles
  • High school music students wanting a creative outlet beyond classical repertoire
  • Choir members, hobby singers and adult learners building confidence and expression
  • Year 12 VCE Music Performance (voice) students
  • University applicants preparing for auditions or music theory requirements

Guitar & ukulele:

  • Singer-songwriters looking to improve accompaniment skills, explore new harmonic ideas, or develop original songs.
  • Self-taught players ready to deepen their technique, fill gaps in theory knowledge, or explore jazz harmony and improvisation.
  • Classically trained musicians interested in expanding into folk, pop, or jazz styles — with or without vocals.
  • Children or teenagers who want to sing and play their favourite songs.
  • Total beginners wanting to build confidence with playing (and possibly singing too).
  • Ukulele club members seeking extra support to keep up with more experienced players.
  • Masters of Music Therapy applicants preparing for guitar audition requirements.

Music theory, songwriting & composition:

  • Singer-songwriters wanting more tools — to get unstuck, understand theory practically, and confidently work with other musicians
  • Singers or lyricists ready to start composing their own music and leading a band
  • Instrumentalists wanting to try lyric writing
  • Songwriters looking to spark new ideas, explore poetic language, and write more distinctive lyrics
  • Self-taught or “by-ear” musicians filling theory gaps or exploring jazz harmony and improvisation
  • Pop, folk, or rock musicians wanting to experiment with more advanced harmony, rhythm, and song form
  • Classically trained players or composers exploring songwriting, improvisation, or contemporary styles
  • VCE/AMEB students preparing for aural and theory exams
  • Uni applicants preparing for entrance exams or building a composition folio
