Bio
I’m a professional oboist and English horn player based in Melbourne, with a Bachelor and Master of Music Performance from the University of Melbourne.
After completing my studies, I had the opportunity to travel to Europe, where I took part in private lessons and masterclasses with several renowned oboists. These included Dominic Wollenweber (Berlin Philharmonic), David Walter (Conservatoire de Paris; Guildhall School of Music), Ralph van Daal (Hochschule Düsseldorf), Max Artved (Royal Danish Academy of Music), Karel Schoofs (Rotterdam Philharmonic), and Jonathan Small (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic). Their guidance has had a strong influence on both my playing and teaching style.
As an orchestral musician, I regularly perform with many of Australia’s leading ensembles, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Opera Australia Orchestra, Victorian Opera, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Royal Melbourne Philharmonic, and Sydney Chamber Opera. I’ve also performed in several professional musical theatre productions including Disney’s Aladdin and Miss Saigon.
Teaching Info
As an experienced music educator, I teach oboe at both primary and secondary levels. I’m currently on staff at Caulfield Grammar School and Xavier College, and I also tutor students from the Melbourne Youth Orchestra, Monash University, and the University of Melbourne. I have extensive experience preparing students for AMEB and VCE exams, youth orchestra auditions, and solo recitals.
My lessons are tailored to suit each student’s individual goals—whether you’re seeking ongoing lessons to develop your technique, sound, and musicality; need targeted support for an upcoming exam or audition; or simply want to play for fun because you love the oboe.
I work with students of all ages and experience levels, from beginners as young as 10 years old to adult learners. It’s never too late to start learning the oboe!
I also offer custom-made reeds at a much more affordable price than most store-bought options. These reeds are tailored to your skill level and playing style, helping you play more comfortably and confidently.
Lessons are typically held at my apartment in Armadale, where I have access to all my teaching materials, keyboard, and reed-making equipment. However, I can travel to nearby suburbs for an additional fee—please feel free to ask about this option.
I speak both English and Cantonese fluently and am registered with a Working With Children Check.
