Artist Biography
Sean Kim is a Korean-Australian pianist gaining recognition for his expressive artistry and dedication to his craft. Raised in Brisbane, he began playing the piano at age four, developing a deep passion for classical music. His formative years included AMEB studies and participation in the Queensland Young Conservatorium program, where he quickly established himself in Queensland’s competitive piano scene, earning top prizes in the Brisbane Eisteddfod and Queensland Piano Competition. Alongside piano, he also studied violin and double bass, which helped shape his musical identity.
His musical development led him to pursue a Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne, where he graduated with First-Class Honours in 2024 under the guidance of Professor Ian Holtham and Konstantin Shamray. During his studies, he was awarded prestigious scholarships, including the Pearis Rodger Scholarship, DW Gardiner Memorial Award, and Grace Funston Scholarship, recognising his artistic excellence.
Currently, Sean is refining his artistry under Steinway Artist Andreas Boyde, renowned for his performances of Brahms’ complete piano works and collaborations with leading orchestras worldwide. He has also participated in masterclasses with internationally acclaimed pianists such as Kirill Gerstein, Konrad Engel, Wolfram Schmidt-Leonardi, and Konstantin Lifschitz, further enriching his musical perspective.
Beyond performance, Sean is a dedicated piano teacher and accompanist, actively contributing to Melbourne’s vibrant music community. His ongoing development as an artist is driven by his passion for uncovering the intricate beauties hidden within music, refining his technique, and connecting with audiences through engaging performances.
Teaching Philosophy
Beyond the accolades, I believe in sharing my passion for the piano. Drawing from six years of private teaching and experience working as a tutor at the Melbourne Conservatorium Young Artists Academy, my approach to lessons combines enthusiasm, expertise, and a genuine desire to nurture musical talent in my students.

Beginner
My approach is to lay a solid foundation by introducing a curated selection of books designed to develop robust musical and pianistic fundamentals. We’ll delve into key aspects such as finger dexterity, rhythm, and music theory, ensuring a comprehensive start to your musical journey.
Intermediate
I focus on refining your skills by revisiting past pieces and addressing any potential bad habits. As we progress, I’ll introduce you to the captivating world of classical music composers, offering insights that deepen your appreciation and understanding of their work.
Advanced
My goal is to guide you towards piano mastery. I’ll work with you to perfect classical pieces, emphasising an advanced level of technique and musical knowledge. Additionally, I’ll encourage exploration into less familiar terrain, including works from the 20th century or compositions by lesser-known but equally remarkable composers. This phase is about pushing boundaries, expanding your repertoire, and cultivating a profound connection with the rich tapestry of musical history.
