Bio
Tone quality is at the heart of expressive cello playing, and four main factors shape it: bow straightness, bow force, bow placement, and bow speed. Many teachers recognise when a good sound is produced but cannot explain the mechanics behind it. I however, take a different approach: every student learns not only what to do, but also why it works. This clarity means students progress with confidence, and see consistent, measurable improvement. A comment that encapsulates my teaching style came from a recent student, who, after 5 years learning cello elsewhere, said this after his very first lesson: “thank you, cello finally makes sense.”
My teaching style balances efficiency and enjoyment. By focusing on one new piece each week, I keep lessons fast paced and engaging, ensuring motivation stays high. With an LMusA in cello, a Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Melbourne (2021), and over eight years of teaching experience, I bring both expertise and enthusiasm to each lesson. My goal is simple: to help people unlock their musical potential in the most understandable, effective, and rewarding way possible.
Teaching Info
The student should expect a warm, fun, yet organised teaching style that listens to the interests and personality of the student to create a structure of learning that suits them. I teach with patience as I believe that if a student misunderstands anything I ask them to do, or, misunderstands why they should do anything I ask them to do, then I, not them, have failed.
The materials one would bring is a cello (if not already in your possession, I could you help you choose a cello if desired), a small journal or workbook for me to write in for practice at home, and hopefully an excitement to learn.
